Ice House

Sonoma, California

This historic building is in the process of being renovated and restored into a private residence. Taken from scripture posted on property:

“The Ice House, located at 301 First Street West, historically referred to as The Cooperage, was built in 1906 by Frederik D. Bose and Benjamin T. Campbell as ‘Sonoma Valley Ice and Cold Storage Co.’ to accommodate the nearby Sonoma Valley Railway for refrigeration purposes for their trips from Sonoma to San Francisco. This allowed the region to be opened up to tourism and the transportation of agricultural goods. The building was built with stone quarried from nearby Shocken Hull, identifiable by its purple color. This stone was chosen for its insulating properties versus a more economical construct out of wood framing. Previously there had been wood-framed buildings on the site, one containing an artesian well, which has recently been restored and is centered in the middle of one of the Ice House main rooms. This artesian well was key to the ice-making process. The restoration and vision of keeping this property historical but earthquake proofed and upgraded to today’s standards was accomplished by Leslie Williams McQuown between the years of 2016-2022”.
